The first thing I noticed as I was fan-girling over Fate/Zero was the consistency issues, but I have realized that those issues stem more from Fate/Stay Night than they do from this. Fate/Zero has a very well constructed story with a balance of epic battles and dialogue. It has definitely raised the bar and keeps one guessing at what is going to occur (even knowing the end results because of Fate/Stay Night). Fate/Zero takes a lot of the unanswered questions from the sequel and shows the answers in great detail. There is a point in the beginning of the season where you will be questioning the ethos, but it more than makes up for that, offering an explanation for the basis of the story. Go watch!
My absolute favorite anime of all time is Fate/Stay Night. A couple days ago, I watched a few episodes with friends and when looking up information, found there has been a recent installment. It has a prequel, Fate/Zero. So right now, I am in the midst of watching this, and already I am spazzing over it. The same character I love is more developed, I get goosebumps during the opening theme, and I am excited to continue this out. There have been some consistency issues that cause a lot of confusion, but It is a remarkable series that is easy to look past the faults. Fate/Stay Night is like white american. It's made up a great deal by the wrong stuff, but it tries to blend in with the other types of cheese. And it is still perfect. Fate/Zero is like a larger slice of Swiss cheese. It tells more about the story, but it does have a lot of plot holes upon first look.
